Thermal Imaging Safe Work Method Statement

The thermal imaging safe work method statement assesses risk following the identification of hazards connected with switchboard thermal imaging and the subsequent implementation of risk control measures to manage risks.

  • Safe work method statements require that control measures be implemented per electrical safety procedures and guidelines for the safe thermal imaging of electrical systems.

Thermographic Scanning Safe Work Practice

Workplace Safety has conducted a comprehensive hazard analysis for the thermal imaging of switchboards, e.g. electrical thermal imaging procedures with risk control measures developed for identified hazards per hazard control hierarchy.

  • Assess and review safety practices in the workplace to control risks

  • WHS consultation for the identification of hazards with the thermographic testing of electrical equipment

  • Risk assessment to identify health and safety hazards in the workplace that may potentially pose an immediate threat of death or serious injury

  • Health and safety planning for thermal imaging switchboards, e.g. minimise risks through the planning process

  • WHS consultation and participation processes ensure adequate health and safety communication

  • Workplace environmental hazards, e.g. working in hazardous areas, electrical equipment hazards

  • Workplace trip hazards likely to result in slips trips and falls injuries

  • Implementation of controls for thermal imaging switchboards, e.g. isolation of hazards and services

  • Health and safety at work information and instructions for workers to manage risks

  • Electrical safety plan for thermal scanning of electrical systems that identify hazards and risks with thermographic surveys and provides guidelines to the thermographic inspection of electrical installations, e.g. thermography inspection procedure

  • Electrical testing equipment, e.g. electrical test device used in the thermographic inspection of an electrical installation

  • Insulated tools when thermal imaging electrical testing, e.g. electricians testing tools

  • Contact with energised electrical equipment resulting in electrocution death, electrical shock and potential injuries from electrical shock

  • Electrical spotter to warn persons working in the vicinity of energised electrical equipment, e.g. electrical hazards

  • Thermographic visual inspection of the electrical installation by an electrician to ensure it complies with electrical installation standards, e.g. safety near electrical installations

  • Thermal imaging of switchboards using a thermal imaging camera for electrical inspections to undertake thermal imaging of electrical panels

  • Recording of electrical thermal imaging results in the electrical thermal imaging inspection report

  • Hazardous chemicals used in connection with the thermal imaging of electrical switchboards

  • Hazardous manual tasks in connection with the thermographic scanning of switchboards

  • Personal protective equipment, e.g. electrical PPE and electrical safety gear

  • Health and safety training for workers, e.g. electrical thermal imaging training

  • Workplace housekeeping incorporating material handling and storage system

  • Legislative and regulatory requirements for compliance with WHS legislation, e.g. electrical code of practice for thermal imaging, electrical thermal imaging regulations and electrical thermal imaging standards

  • Monitoring controls, e.g. assessment and review the effectiveness of control measures

  • Electrician tasks and activities in connection with switchboard thermal imaging

SWMS Electrical

Thermographic Scanning Method Statement

Thermal imaging SWMS shall assess the risk of construction high-risk activities involved in thermal imaging switchboards.

High-risk work activities that may expose workers to WHS hazards are likely to include but not be limited to:

  • Implementing an isolation procedure for the thermal imaging of switchboards to ensure electrical equipment safety

  • Thermographic scanning of switchboards

  • Operation of thermographic scanner for thermographic scanning

  • Other thermographic scanning hazards
