SOP Chainsaw

Workplace Safety has conducted a comprehensive job safety analysis for operating a chainsaw, e.g. cutting trees and changing and maintaining a chainsaw chain with risk control measures developed for identified hazards per WHS hierarchy of controls.

  • WHS consultation with employees on health and safety matters to identify potential hazards with operating a chainsaw and ensure electrical hand tool safety

  • WHS consultation and participation processes ensure adequate health and safety communication

  • Pre-operational inspection of an electric chainsaw per electrical tools inspection checklist, e.g. how to check tools and equipment are free from damage such as damaged electrical cords

  • Damaged tools and equipment shall have an out of service tag placed on it with procedures for reporting faulty equipment in the workplace implemented

  • Do not alter or modify a chainsaw, e.g. removal of chainsaw handle will affect tool safety

  • Inspect chainsaw chain for signs of wear and damage per tool safety checklist, and if necessary, maintain or replace and dispose of damaged chainsaw chain appropriately

  • Chainsaw operation per chainsaw SOP focuses on chainsaw control measures to reduce the level of risk

  • Workplace environmental hazards, e.g. confined space and working at heights

  • Hazardous chemicals and hazardous products used in connection with operating a chainsaw

  • Hazardous manual tasks in connection with the operation of a chainsaw

  • Personal protective equipment, e.g. respiratory protective equipment, protective clothing, eye protection

  • Health and safety training for workers, e.g. tool safety training

  • Workplace housekeeping per housekeeping policy and procedures

  • Legislative and regulatory requirements for compliance with WHS legislation, e.g. work health and safety regulations, managing electrical risks at the workplace code of practice and power tool safety standards

  • Monitoring controls, e.g. assessment and review the effectiveness of control measures

  • Tasks and activities in connection with operating a chainsaw

Safe Operating Procedure Chainsaw

How to Use a Chainsaw

Chainsaw SOP shall assess the risk of high-risk activities with the operation of a chainsaw.

High-risk work activities that may expose workers to WHS hazards are likely to include but not be limited to:

  • Plant and equipment used in the work task, e.g. chainsaw

  • Pre-operational inspection of chainsaw

  • Change chainsaw blade
