SOP Hammer Drill

Workplace Safety has conducted a comprehensive job safety analysis for hammer drilling operations, e.g. drilling of masonry materials and how to change a hammer drill bit with risk control measures developed for identified hazards per WHS hierarchy of controls.

  • WHS consultation with employees on health and safety matters to identify potential hazards with operating an electric hammer drill and ensure electrical hand tool safety

  • WHS consultation and participation processes ensure adequate health and safety communication

  • Pre-operational inspection of hammer drill per electrical tools inspection checklist, e.g. how to check tools and equipment are free from damage such as damaged electrical cords

  • Damaged tools and equipment shall have an out of service tag placed on it with procedures for reporting faulty equipment in the workplace implemented

  • Do not alter or modify a hammer drill, e.g. hammer drill handle removal will affect tool safety

  • Inspect drill bit for signs of wear and damage per tool safety checklist, replace if necessary and dispose of damaged drill bits appropriately

  • Hammer drill operation per hammer drill SOP focuses on hammer drill control measures to reduce the level of risk

  • Personal decontamination procedures to be implemented where exposure to silica has taken place, e.g. correct method for removing PPE

  • Workplace environmental hazards, e.g. confined space and working at heights

  • Working at height on ladders, aluminium mobile scaffold and elevated work platforms when operating a hammer drill

  • Hazardous chemicals and hazardous products used in connection with operating a hammer drill

  • Hazardous manual tasks in connection with the operation of a hammer drill

  • Personal protective equipment, e.g. respiratory protective equipment, protective clothing, eye protection

  • Health and safety training for workers, e.g. tool safety training

  • Workplace housekeeping per housekeeping policy and procedures

  • Legislative and regulatory requirements for compliance with WHS legislation, e.g. work health and safety regulations, managing electrical risks at the workplace code of practice and power tool safety standards

  • Monitoring controls, e.g. assessment and review the effectiveness of control measures

  • Tasks and activities in connection with operating a hammer drill

How to Use Hammer Drill

Hammer drill SOP shall assess the risk of high-risk activities with the operation of a hammer drill.

High-risk work activities that may expose workers to WHS hazards are likely to include but not be limited to:

  • Plant and equipment used in the work task, e.g. hammer drill

  • Pre-operational inspection of hammer drill

  • Change drill bits

  • Use of portable RCD safety switch
